Herold (Münsterschwarzach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Herold († March 27 or 28, 1233 ) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery in Münsterschwarzach from 1221 to 1233 .

Münsterschwarzach before Herold

Herold was the twenty-third abbot of the Münsterschwarzach monastery. The abbey had established itself as the monastery of the Würzburg bishops since the beginning of the 11th century . As the first abbot they installed the abbot Alapold, who was to take care of the consolidation of monastic life. Some prelates followed, whose appointments were related to the so-called Gorzer reforms . The most famous of these abbots was Egbert von Münsterschwarzach .

In the 12th century, other monasteries took over the reform efforts. Above all, the Black Forest Monastery of Hirsau went ahead . Münsterschwarzach also wanted to be part of the new knowledge and Abbot Dietrich I was brought in. The reform abbots who followed the prelate had new monastery buildings erected and the convent expanded. Ultimately, however, the reform in Münsterschwarzach was not very successful.

Life

Nothing is known precisely about the origins, youth and training of Abbot Herold. He took over the abbey after the death of his predecessor Dietrich II in 1221. The first official act that has been handed down is to take over the patronage rights of the chapel in Maindsondheim near Dettelbach , which the monastery of Würzburg bishop Dietrich von Homburg and his cathedral chapter in 1223 and 1225 respectively has been confirmed. Friedrich von Scheinfeld had previously given them to the monastery.

Bishop Dietrich's successor Hermann I von Lobdeburg then led numerous feuds against the allied bishops of Bamberg, the Counts of Henneberg and von Castell . On November 22nd, 1228 there was a battle of the conflicting parties, which was fought in the area of today's Stadtschwarzach and in which the city was burned down. The monastery itself was also affected.

At the same time, Abbot Herold expanded the monastery property. An undated document mentions a donation from the widow of the "Shado", who gave part of her vineyards to the abbey. There is also a historical dispute between the Cistercian monastery of Ebrach and the Main Abbey. A forest between Birkenroth and Rombach in the Steigerwald was the reason for the dispute. Abbot Herold died on March 27 or 28, 1233.
