Hermann Bottenbruch (born September 14, 1928 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ; † May 20, 2019 in Gelsenkirchen ) was a German mathematician and computer scientist .

Life

Bottenbruch grew up in Mülheim an der Ruhr. In the final phase of the Second World War he served as an anti-aircraft helper . In 1947 he began studying mathematics at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , which he graduated with a diploma in 1951. He then became an employee at the "Institute for Practical Mathematics" founded by Alwin Walther at the Technical University of Darmstadt . Bottenbruch received his doctorate in 1957 from Alwin Walther with the dissertation "Translation of algorithmic formula languages into the program languages of computing machines".

In the same year, on the recommendation of Alwin Walther, he became a member of the international working group for a new programming language that bundles and standardizes previous knowledge - according to Friedrich Bauer , Bottenbruch coined the name (at least for Germany): "Algol" - for algorithmic language, resp. in English "Algorithmic Language". In 1958 the members of the working group - Friedrich L. Bauer, Hermann Bottenbruch, Heinz Rutishauser , Klaus Samelson , John Backus , Charles Katz , Alan Perlis and Joseph Henry Wegstein met at the ETH Zurich. The result of the effort was Algol 58 .

In 1960 and 1961 Bottenbruch worked at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory . He then took on a leading position in German industry, where he a. a. acted as a specialist in chimney construction until he founded his own company Primasoft GmbH in Oberhausen in 1994 , which offers IT consulting and database solutions.

Hermann Bottenbruch died on May 20, 2019 in Gelsenkirchen.
