Hermann Brauns

Hermann Brauns (born September 19, 1838 in the forester's lodge Selzerthurm near Uslar / Solling; † June 5, 1911 in Eisenach ) was a German manager and politician ( NLP ).

Life

Brauns, who was of the Lutheran denomination, was the son of the Hanoverian forest master Wilhelm Brauns. He first studied chemistry and then metallurgy. In 1863 - at the age of 25 - he became head of the Krupp steelworks in Essen , where he technically designed, improved and managed the first Bessemer plant in Germany until 1873. From 1873 to 1877 he was the technical director of the Georgs-Marien-Hütte in Osnabrück. Under his leadership, the smelting of a usable Bessemere iron from local ores was made possible there. Only a few German smelters could do this. In 1877 Brauns became the technical director of Union, AG for mining, iron and steel industry in Dortmund, and from 1885–1902 managed the company as general director. The company grew significantly during his tenure. Braun was interested in traffic issues. He was committed to the construction of the Dortmund-Ems Canal and the Dortmund harbor.

Brauns was from 1899 to 1905 a member of the Provincial Parliament of Westphalia for the NLP and the constituency of Dortmund. In Dortmund he was a city councilor and (deputy) city councilor. He was also President of the Dortmund Chamber of Commerce . He was awarded the title of Commerzienrat.
