Hermann Duft and Hans Wilhelm Bassenauer

Hermann Duft (* 1938; † August 15, 1969) and Hans Wilhelm Bassenauer (* 1938; † August 15, 1969) were two German serial killers who murdered six people in Greece - within a short period of time in 1969. They were arrested and sentenced to death and executed after a trial.

background

Fragrance was born in Frankfurt and Bassenauer in Darmstadt . Both were professional plumbers . Fragrance was single while Bassenauer was married and had three children. Fragrance served briefly in the French Foreign Legion during the Algerian War .

crime

Fragrance and Bassenauer came to Greece by car on February 17, 1969. They murdered six people over the next few weeks. On March 5, they killed the night watchman at a petrol station near Thebes and a soldier who was present. They murdered a Greek-American stockbroker in Voula on March 13, a taxi driver on April 7, and a gas station worker near Athens on April 9 . On April 12th, on the way from Athens to Patras , you murdered a Greek who lived in Germany and was vacationing in his homeland. They left their car and returned to Athens in the victim's car.

The Greek military dictatorship banned newspapers from publishing news of the murders until the two perpetrators were caught.

arrest

The Greek police were alerted on April 16 by a woman who saw "small blood stains" on a car with German license plates; the perpetrator's car. Duft and Bassenhauer were arrested while trying to pick up the car. They were questioned by the police and arrested. They have been tried on charges of murder and robbery.

Trial and verdict

The trial against Duft and Hassenauer took place shortly afterwards before an appeal court. They were found guilty and sentenced to death for each of the murders. Her appeal was rejected by the Supreme Court of Cassation, as was her application to the Pardon Council to commute her sentence to life imprisonment. On December 15, 1969, the death sentence was carried out. Both perpetrators were shot; Bassenauer in Corfu and fragrance in Aegina .

Bassenauer's widow later said: "My husband received a fair sentence." She only spoke out against the date of the execution shortly before Christmas. Der Spiegel published an article in 1969 and wrote "[...] once again Germans are being executed for murder in Greece."
