Hermann Katinger

Hermann Wolf-Dietrich Katinger (born April 26, 1941 in St. Pölten ) is an Austrian microbiologist and recipient of the Wilhelm Exner Medal .

Act

Hermann Katinger was the first in Europe to use mammalian cells for the technical production of biopharmaceuticals. In 1992 Katinger founded the company Polymun Scientific GmbH , which deals with the development of bioprocesses and products for clinical testing. He produced antibodies for the treatment of cancer in children, which are used in the St. Anna Children's Hospital. Katinger's measures have made the Institute for Applied Microbiology a respected institution in the field of biopharmaceuticals or plant biotechnology . The first transgenic tree was produced at the institute.

Awards

In 2002 Katinger was awarded the Wilhelm Exner Medal .
