Career

At the age of 18, Mecke was already a member of the first team of FC Schalke 04 , for which he was in the Gauliga Westphalia from 1936 to 1943 , in one of initially 16, later increased to 23 Gauligen at the time of National Socialism as the uniform top division in the German Reich , Denied point games. In this only his club dominated and so it is not surprising that he won the Gaume Championship seven times during his club membership.

Although his club took part in the final round of the German championship just as often , he was only used in the seasons 1936/37 , 1937/38 and 1938/39 . It had its premiere on May 23, 1937 in the last game of Group B in a 2-2 draw at Bremen's Weserstadion . So he had a share in the championship that his team won on June 20, 1937 after the 2-0 final victory over 1. FC Nuremberg in Berlin. He scored his only two goals in his total of nine final round matches in the following season on April 15, 1938 in the second group B game in a 6-0 victory over SV Dessau 05 . He and his team also reached the final scheduled for June 26, 1938 in Berlin against Hannover 96 , which found no winner with 3: 3 nV . The replay that became necessary a week later at the same location also went into overtime due to the late goal from Hanoverian Johannes Jakobs for a 3-3 draw in the 88th minute. Erich Meng finally scored the 4: 3 winning goal for Hannover 96 in the 117th minute. A year later, on June 18, 1939, FC Schalke 04 won their fourth with a 9-0 victory over the completely overwhelmed SK Admira Wien Championship; Mecke was not a member of the final team, but was still allowed to call himself German champion, as he played a part in the two games against Wormatia Worms in Group 4 . He also played the semi-finals, won 2-1 against Waldhof Mannheim on December 5, 1937, for the Tschammer Cup introduced in 1935 , which FC Schalke 04 won 2-1 in the Cologne final on January 9, 1938 against Fortuna Düsseldorf without him. He played his last game for the national club cup on July 19, 1942 in a 2-0 first round win over the team from Hamborn 07 .
