Hermann Niggemeyer
Hermann Niggemeyer (* 1908 in Münsterland ; † 2005 ) was a German ethnologist .
Life
Niggemeyer was born in 1908 in Münsterland .
After completing his Abitur in 1926, he began studying geography and anthropology in Cologne . He learned among other things from Julius Lips and Franz Thorbecke . In 1922, Niggemeyer completed his studies with a doctorate.
After completing his studies, he took a brief position in Vienna with Wilhelm Koppers and then in 1934 took on an assistant position at the Frobenius Institute in the city of Frankfurt am Main . In 1937 he took part in a research project on the Moluccas , which was led by Adolf Ellegard Jensen .
From 1940 to 1945 Niggemeyer was called up for military service and took part in the Second World War . He became a prisoner of war , from which he was released in 1947. After he returned to Frankfurt am Main, he got a job at the Museum of Ethnology (now the Museum of World Cultures ). In addition, Niggemeyer carried out field research in India in the 1950s . In 1966 Niggemeyer was appointed director of the Völkerkundemuseum and thus successor to Carl Augustus Schmitz . In 1972 he retired.
Hermann Niggemeyer died in 2005.
