Hermann Remmert

Hermann Remmert (born March 29, 1931 in Hanover ; † June 23, 1994 in Goslar ) was a German ecologist and professor of ecology at the University of Marburg .

He was one of the few scientific German-speaking ecologists who enjoyed worldwide renown - even if his mosaic cycle theory could not prevail against the Forest Gap Theory .

Remmert was born as the son of a teacher couple in Hanover. As a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation , he studied in Kiel and received his doctorate there with a dissertation on ecological studies on dipteras from the North and Baltic Seas . In 1962 he completed his habilitation in Kiel with the work The Hatching Rhythm of Insects .

In 1968 he was appointed full professor of zoology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . In 1976 he took over the chair for ecology at the Philipps University in Marburg, which he held until his death.

Remmert's main work on ecology - a textbook appeared in 5 editions and has been translated into 6 languages. He acted as editor for the book series Ecological Studies published by Springer and for the journals Oecologia und Naturwissenschaften .

Hermann Remmert was married and had a son.
