Hermann Ullmann

Hermann Ullmann (born September 12, 1884 in Teplitz-Schönau in Bohemia, † February 23, 1958 in Stockholm ) was a German journalist . During the Weimar Republic he shaped the political direction of people 's conservatism . The main focus of his journalistic activities were reports on the situation of Germans abroad .

Life

Ullmann was the son of a Protestant businessman. From 1890 to 1902 Hermann Ullmann attended the Protestant elementary school and grammar school in Teplitz-Schönau. Ullmann went to study in Prague, Heidelberg and Berlin. During his studies he became a member of the Association of German Students in Heidelberg . At the age of 22 he received his doctorate in Vienna. He then worked for two years as a high school teacher in Austria. Various journalistic activities followed. Ullmann made contact with Ferdinand Avenarius through culturally critical articles and worked for his magazine Kunstwart from 1904 to 1914 . From 1912 to 1937 he edited the magazine Deutsche Arbeit . Ullmann was a volunteer during World War I and served in the war press office. From 1925 to 1931 he was editor of Politische Wochenschrift (with Rudolf Fischer as editor) . For Volkstum und Staat (PWS), a Berlin organ of the socially and reformist-oriented people's conservatives. whose aim was to dissuade a majority of the right-wing political forces from the principled opposition to the Weimar Republic and to win them over to positive cooperation. In the Politische Wochenschrift u. a. published a momentous article by Walther Lambach , which resulted in the separation of the Christian-Social and the moderate right from the DNVP.

Ullmann died of a heart attack on February 23, 1958 while on a lecture tour in Stockholm.
