Life

After attending primary school, Zahn learned to be a precision mechanic and went into business for himself. Before the Second World War he began to work in the IBELO pipe factory in Frankfurt. He saved the lives of its founders by putting them on a plane to England to protect them from the National Socialists , as they were Jews . Zahn was chairman of the professional association of the lighter industry and for this on the supervisory board of the Frankfurter Messe GmbH . In 1972 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his economic and social achievements.

Companies

Zahn rebuilt IBELO after the war . Thanks to his commercial and technical knowledge , it became the largest lighter manufacturer in Europe and employed almost 450 people . Because of cheaper lighters from Japan, the company went bankrupt in 1986 and was sold. The new owner gradually reduced production until he finally laid off the remaining employees in 2000 because the external sales company also became insolvent. Today the remainder of the stocks are still sold worldwide via a north German company.

family

Hermann Zahn was married to his wife Melanie until his death. The marriage produced the sons Walter and Werner . Werner Zahn became known when he married the figure skater Marika Kilius in 1964 . Werner Zahn's marriage ended in divorce after a few years.
