Hermarchus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hermarchos from Mytilene (* around 340 BC; † around 260 BC in Athens) was an ancient Greek philosopher . He belonged to the school of the Epicureans .

Hermarchus was the son of Agemortus and a student, friend and contemporary of Epicurus . He was probably determined by Epicurus in a will to succeed him in the management of the school. Around 270 BC He took over the office of Scholarchen .

None of his writings (including "Treatises in Letter Form", "Against Empedocles ", "Against Plato " and "Against Aristotle ") were preserved. An excerpt from the work "Against Empedocles" is probably preserved in Porphyrios' words.
