Hermenegildo Lopes , fighting name Cupa (alternative spelling : Ermenegildo Lopes , Kupa ) is an East Timorese politician and diplomat.

Career

Lopes is the party founder and chairman of the Partido Milénio Democrático (PMD), which split off from the Partido Social Democrata (PSD) in 2004 . The party formed several electoral alliances, such as the Liga Democrática Progressiva (2007), the Bloco Proclamador (2012), the Bloku Unidade Popular (2012/2017) and the Fórum Demokrátiku Nasionál (2018). Lopes held leading positions in all alliances. Neither the PMD as an individual party, nor the various alliances succeeded in sending even one member of the East Timorese national parliament .

Lopes worked as a foreign policy advisor for Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão (2007–2015). In mid-2019, Lopes was proposed by the government as the new East Timorese ambassador to Cambodia , but the official appointment did not take place until January 2020. Lopes handed over his accreditation on April 16, 2020.
