Hermes Bartolomeu Martins de Araújo Fontes (born August 28, 1888 in Boquim , Sergipe , † December 25, 1930 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian writer .

Life

Hermes Fontes received a generous scholarship through the mediation of the Governor of Sergipe, Martinho Garcez . This enabled him not only to attend the Liceu Nacional (secondary school) in Rio , but also to study law at the University of Rio de Janeiro (1906) . In 1911 he successfully completed this course.

In the same year Fontes got a job with the magazine Diário de Notícias and as such he significantly supported Ruy Barbosa in his political ambitions. Through his friendship Fontes got a job as an administrative officer. In addition, he continued to write for newspapers and magazines such as "Fon-Fon", "Catea", "Imparcial" and "Folha do Dia".

Domício da Gama and Ruy Barbosa, even as presidents, did not manage to allow their friend Fontes to join the Academia Brasileira de Letras . Since the personal - private as well as political - ambitions of Hermes Fontes could not be achieved, he began to suffer from depression and also developed an inferiority complex . At the age of 42, Hermes Fontes committed suicide on December 25, 1930 in Rio de Janeiro .
