Hernán Rivera Letelier

Hernán Rivera Letelier (born July 11, 1950 in Talca , Chile ) is a Chilean author who is best known for his depictions of life in the Chilean saltpetre mining areas.

Life

After his birth, Hernán Rivera Letelier's family moved to the mining region of the north of Chile to the mining settlement of Algorta. After the mine was closed there, it moved to Antofagasta . After his mother's death, the children were distributed among the aunts. Letelier himself stayed alone in Antofagasta, got by selling newspapers and was an errand boy for the nitrate company Anglo Lautaro (today: Soquimich). At 17 he went on hikes that took him to Bolivia , Peru , Ecuador and Argentina . After three years of wandering, he returned to work in Antofagasta in 1973 and married a 17-year-old woman at the age of 24.

He worked in the saltpeter mine "Pedro de Valdivia" and graduated from school in evening classes. He was later admitted to high school teaching after receiving training at INACAP . Today (2011) he lives in Antofagasta with his wife and four children.
