Herod ( Hebrew הוֹרְדוּס Hordus , Greek  Ἡρῴδης Hērōdēs ) is the name of several members of the Herodian dynasty in ancient Palestine:

  • Herod the Great (approx. 73 BC – 4 BC), builder of the Herodian temple in Jerusalem, the Gospel of Matthew attributes the child murder in Bethlehem to him
  • Herodes Archelaos (23 BC - approx. 18 AD), ethnarch of Samaria, Judea and Idumea, son of Herod the Great and his fourth wife Malthake
  • Herodes Boethos (* approx. 22 BC), first husband of Herodias, father of Salome, son of Herod the great and his seventh wife Mariamne
  • Herod Antipas (20 BC - approx. 39 AD), tetrarch in Galilee and Perea, in the New Testament he has John the Baptist executed and plays a role in the process of Jesus; Son of Herod the Great and his fourth wife Malthake
  • Herodes Philippos (approx. 20 BC - 34 AD), Tetrarch in Iturea and Trachontis, son of Herod the Great and his fifth wife Cleopatra
  • Herod of Chalkis (approx. 12 BC – 48 AD), Tetrarch of Chalkis, grandson of Herod the Great
  • Herod Agrippa I (10 BC – 44 AD), King of Judea, appears in the Acts of the Apostles as “King Herod”, who has James the Elder executed; Brother of Herod of Chalcis
  • Herod Agrippa II. (27 AD – after 93 AD), last king of Judea, son of Herod Agrippa I; meets in the Acts of the Apostles the imprisoned Apostle Paul at the governor Festus
