The rule of Warthausen with its seat in Warthausen was first mentioned with the Lords of Warthausen in 1120. They sold their rule to Emperor Friedrich I around 1167. Before 1234 it came from the Hohenstaufen to the Waldburg Truchess . After this line became extinct, rule over the Lords of Walsee and Waldsee came to Habsburg in 1331 . The rule of Warthausen was part of the Austrian Empire .

In 1696 the rule with now 13 villages and hamlets came to the Counts of Stadion , who owned them until 1826.
