Herschel is a lunar crater north of the Ptolemy crater, which is 153 kilometers in diameter, which is much larger . In the northern area there are also Gyldén , Spörer and Flammarion . The latter borders the sinus medii .

Although the western wall has a straight section, the rim of the Herschel crater is largely circular. It has a little eroded ridge. Between the crater edge and the central mountain , the wall is terraced.
