Herwig van Nieuwland
Herwig van Nieuwland (born March 25, 1952 in Hardegsen , Northeim district ) is a German judge. From 2000 until his retirement in 2017 he was President of the Lower Saxony Higher Administrative Court and from 2013 to 2019 President of the Lower Saxony State Court .
Life
After graduating from the Felix-Klein-Gymnasium in Göttingen, Herwig van Nieuwland studied law, economics and politics at the University of Göttingen from 1970 to 1975 . He then worked from 1975 to 1981 as a research assistant at the Institute for General Legal Theory and Public Law. In 1981 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the barriers to basic rights at the University of Göttingen.
In 1981 Herwig van Nieuwland began his judicial career as a judge at the Braunschweig Administrative Court and was appointed presiding judge there in 1991. In 1993 he took over as President of the newly founded Administrative Court in Göttingen . In 2000 Herwig van Nieuwland was appointed President of the Lower Saxony Higher Administrative Court in Lüneburg. On March 13, 2013, the Lower Saxony State Parliament elected him President of the Lower Saxony State Court . Herwig van Nieuwland had been a member of the State Court of Justice since 2000, initially as a deputy member, since 2005 as a member and since 2006 as Vice-President.
In addition to his judicial work, Herwig van Nieuwland also worked for many years as an honorary director of the administrative, business and vocational academy in Lüneburg. He has been chairman of the board of trustees of this academy since 2014. In addition, he is co-editor of the specialist journal "Niedersächsische Verwaltungsblätter" and the " Journal for Public Law in Northern Germany ". He is also a founding member of the Friends of the Jewish Center in Göttingen and the Alumni Association of the University of Göttingen . From 1981 to 1983 he was a member of the district council of the Göttingen district and from 1991 to 1993 councilor of the city of Braunschweig . Herwig van Nieuwland has been a member of the SPD since 1974 .
