history

The church was built for the settlement of the Lazarists who came to Diamantina in 1867. The foundation stone was laid in 1885 in the presence of Bishop João Antônio dos Santos . After four years of construction, the church was completed and in January 1890 Bishop dos Santos consecrated it. Pope Benedict XV elevated the church to the rank of minor basilica in 1920. Today it is the seminary church for the seminary of the ecclesiastical province of Diamantina.

The single-nave church was built in the neo-Gothic style. The facade is characterized by the two slender towers that were placed on the sides next to the triangular gable. The rib vault is supported by slender pillars . The main decoration is the stained glass windows donated by French families and religious institutions. Fifteen of them are dedicated to the mysteries of the Rosary and one to the appearance of the Heart of Jesus. A rose window was inserted above the portal, and twelve rays for the twelve apostles emanate from the center with a depiction of the Sacred Heart.
