The Herz-Jesu-Kapelle is a historic Roman Catholic church building in Heiligendamm , town of Bad Doberan . It was built in 1887/88 according to plans by Gotthilf Ludwig Möckel . It has not been used for worship services since the 1990s. The condition of the building is in need of renovation.

history

Heiligendamm, the oldest seaside resort in Germany, founded at the end of the 18th century and long reserved for the aristocracy, had neither a Protestant nor a Catholic church for almost a hundred years. Since the 1860s, Catholic bathers, especially from southern Germany and Austria, have increasingly expressed their desire for Sunday masses on site. The grand ducal bath manager Chamberlain Hermann von Suckow , himself a convert , made this concern his own. In 1866, Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II approved the celebration of Catholic services in private. At the same time, von Suckow began collecting donations for a church building, which was well received across Germany. When Heiligendamm was sold in private hands in 1873, he was able to secure the reservation of a plot of land in the south-eastern forest area. In 1879, Möckel's draft was presented, which met with general approval. But it took another eight years before the amount of money raised allowed construction to begin. On August 23, 1888, the chapel was consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus . During the next hundred years, Holy Mass was usually celebrated there in the summer months by guest priests. After the church was no longer in use, large parts of the interior furnishings were stolen. The future maintenance and use of the building is open.

architecture

The Herz-Jesu-Kapelle is a neo-Gothic, east - facing hall church in the style of the north German brick Gothic . It consists of a two-bay nave and an original choir - rotunda with fan vaults inside and roof turrets on top. A sign with the portal is added to the west gable . It bears the inscription Hic Domus Dei est et porta Coeli ("Here is the house of God and the gate of heaven", ( Gen 28.17  EU )). On the south side there is the sacristy and a small stair tower with a side entrance. The chapel seats about fifty people.
