Heart of Jesus in Bielefeld-Brackwede

Herz Jesu is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Brackwede district of Bielefeld . It belongs to the parish of St. Elisabeth Bielefeld in the dean's office Bielefeld-Lippe of the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

history

In 1871 Brackwede had 97 Catholics, whose number had grown to over 450 by 1890. They belonged to the St. Jodokus community in Bielefeld. On August 29, 1890, the church council therefore decided to build a mission house. With the approval of the Minden district government and a capital of 15,000 marks , a church was built, which was consecrated on December 13, 1891.

After the number of believers had risen to over 700 by 1898, the church became too small. In 1917 the Herz-Jesu-Kirche was elevated to a parish church. From 1918 onwards, regular collections were held for a new building, but in the end there was an extension built in 1932. In 1941 a baroque altar was moved from a chapel in Senne 1 to the church.

During the Second World War , the number of believers rose to over 9,000. In 1950 the Marienhöhe was inaugurated. On September 2, 1953, construction work began on a new church. The foundation stone was laid on October 25th of that year . In 1956, construction had progressed so far that the bells could be moved from the old church to the new one. In August 1962, the old church was demolished and a parsonage and sexton's apartment were built in its place .

During a major church renovation in 1987, the high altar was dismantled and the chancel was lowered. By Palm Sunday the work was completed and the church could be consecrated again. In 1997 the church tower was renovated.
