Hesso I. von Backnang

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hesso I. von Backnang , also Hesso the Elder , is considered to be the first lord of Backnang from the Hesson dynasty .

In the necrology of the Abbey of Backnang , where he is given the nickname " the good ", he is named as the father of Hesso II . The exact chronological classification is uncertain due to the lack of clear sources .

Presumably he is identical to Hesso, who together with his son (then Hesso II.) Testifies to a donation in 1067. In terms of time, he would have to be identical to the last Hessonian count in Sülchgau (attested in 1057), which means that during his reign around the middle of the 11th century the focus of the family was shifted to Backnang. His parents would then most likely be Hesso, count in Sülchgau and Murrgau, who was recorded in 1027, and his wife Gisela von Backnang , who brought the city of Backnang into the dynasty. Hesso I would probably be identical with their son Hesso von Blansingen , mentioned around 1050 , who had a brother named Gerung and owned important lands on the southern Upper Rhine .

The consecutive numbering of the Hessonen rulers is not uniform, occasionally his father, Gisela's husband, is already counted as Hesso I. von Backnang, in this case the ordinal numbers shift by a generation.
