Sign to the desert on the B 188

Hetelingen is a deserted settlement near the B 188 around 5 km east of Burgdorf in Lower Saxony . It is one of a series of devastation around Burgdorf that fell into desolation in the Middle Ages .

description

Historical records of the earlier settlement, such as the year it was founded or when it was abandoned, are not known. Archaeological excavations brought building rubble and ceramics from the 14th century to light. In addition, a sculpture of a Madonna made from shell limestone was found. Another figure found was made of sandstone . The sacred objects found indicate that there was a church at this point, which was probably abandoned at the beginning of the 15th century.

Wall and ditch remnants or earth fencing

The desert lies in the forest area of Burgdorfer Holz. From the earlier settlement, a circular elevation about 50 meters in diameter is visible in the area, which is cut through by a forest path. The elevation is surrounded by a small wall and partly by a depression in which a body of water used to flow. The place bears the historically handed down name Hehlen Kirchhof, which refers to the earlier church building. Around the church were the earlier buildings of the settlement, of which flat elevations are still visible in the area. In the wider area there are earth walls in the forest, which could have been enclosures for cattle or plant gardens.

Today there is an information board inside the wall. There are two larger boulders on the floor with inscriptions indicating the location of the church there.
