Heterophallus is a species of viviparous toothcarps (Poeciliidae) withfew species. The fish are found on the Caribbean side of southeastern Mexico in the catchment areas of Río Grijalva and Rio Coatzacoalcos .

Heterophallus species are similar to the gambus , with which they are closely related. Males reach a length of 2.5 cm, females are slightly larger at 3.5 cm. Your body is straight and your head is pointed. Typical of the genus is a dorsal fin that is set far back and is supported by 6 to 7 fin rays. With the exception of the pelvic fins, all fins are rounded. The fish are yellowish-brown in color with a dark central stripe along the sides of the body. The sideline is accompanied by 26 to 29 scales.
