Athyma cama is occurring in Asia Butterfly ( butterfly ) from the family of Nymphalidae (Nymphalidae) and the sub-family of kingfishers (Limenitidinae). In English usage he is referred to as the Orange Staff Sergeant .

The wingspan of the moth is 60 to 70 millimeters. There is a clear sexual dimorphism between the sexes . The males have a black-brown to black basic color of the wing tops. A broad band of white patches extends over the disk region , which is briefly interrupted on the forewings and which also runs over the abdomen . A small orange-yellow stain stands out near the apex . A thin orange-brown line from the basal region to the cell runs parallel to the front edge on the upper side of the fore wing . The fringes are alternately black and white piebald. In the females, three broad yellow stripes stand out from the dark brown base color of the wing tops. There is a large and a small yellow spot near the apex. On the orange-brown undersides of the wings of the males and the reddish-brown of the females, the pattern of spots on the upper side shines through in a similar form.

Similar species

The males of Athyma nefte show an orange-colored band on the submarginal region of the upper side of the hind wings, the females are more strongly orange-yellow on the upper side of the wing.

Distribution, subspecies and habitat

The species occurs in India , Indonesia , Myanmar , Thailand , Malaysia , in the Himalayas and in southeast China as well as on Taiwan . Six subspecies are currently classified in the various occurrence areas . Athyma cama prefers to colonize evergreen moist deciduous forests.

Way of life

The moths fly in several generations a year. They seldom visit flowers to eat, but sometimes take in liquids and minerals in damp places on the earth. The caterpillars feed primarily on leaves of Glochidion species leading to the plant family of Phyllanthaceae belong.
