history

Commemoration of the attack on February 19, 2020

The Heumarkt was originally the eastern quay of the Main Harbor in Hanauer Neustadt, which was built at the end of the 16th century. In 1666 the harbor was filled in and another block of houses was built in its place between 1673 and 1686. The Heumarkt was given its shape as a wide street. In 1715 Count Johann Reinhard III. von Hanau set up the “Heuwaage”, the city scales - from which the name of the hay market is derived. The Licentamt (a tax authority ) was also located here. The square-like street was used as a marketplace.

On September 24, 1830, outraged Hanau citizens who opposed the failed customs and economic policy of Elector Wilhelm II and his neo-absolutist government stormed the license office ( Hanau riots ), with which the July Revolution of 1830 broke out in the Electorate of Hesse .

In the time between the two world wars, the Heumarkt served as a bus station for downtown Hanau.

In the attack in Hanau 2020 on February 19, 2020, in which a total of nine people died, one of the two crime scenes was a hookah bar on the Heumarkt.
