The Heweliuszbrunnen in Gdansk is a water feature that was set up in 2014 in Gdansk's old town . It is located on Rajska street north of the large mill .

description

The fountain, which is reminiscent of the Gdańsk astronomer and mayor of the old town Johannes Hevelius (1611–1687, Polish: Jan Heweliusz ), consists on the one hand of a rectangular, approx. 3 × 7 meter large area on which three large metal rings interrupted at the top are placed vertically are. These metal rings each have four nozzles (48 in total) in the middle and lower area on each side , from which fine jets of water are sprayed. In addition, they each have a powerful nozzle in the upper area, the water jet of which is atomized from the opposite end of the ring. Between the rings and to the side of them there are further nozzles that create fountains of different heights. Outside the actual area there are four further nozzles on each of the two long sides of the fountain, which spew water out in an arc into the center of the fountain. On the other hand, there is a black wall south of the area, separated from the actual water feature by a path about 1.50 meters wide, from which water cascades down into a collecting device. On the side of the wall facing the Great Mill there is a plaque with the following quote from Hevelius' work Selenographia :

"Water, this liquid matter, has nothing solid in it."

This quote can be read on the board in a total of six languages (Polish, Latin , English, German, Russian and Spanish). The water feature is illuminated in the dark.

The planning for the Heweliuszbrunnen, which was built on the occasion of the completion of the renovation of the Gdańsk water and sewage infrastructure, comes from the Gdańsk architect Roland Kwaśny , whose design emerged as the winner in a competition. The well was built between April and July 2014 and cost two million zloty (= approx. € 470,000), which was raised by the Gdańsk water management.
