Witch house

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hexenhäusel (also Hexenhäuschen or Hexenhäusl ; Sorbian Wjerina chěžka ) is one of the oldest buildings of the city of Bautzen .

history

The former fisherman's house was built before 1604 and survived the great city fire of 1634, which caused great damage to the city of Bautzen. It also withstood all subsequent fires and wars. It still has old shingles (made of wood) on the roof and wooden gutters.

According to a popular tale , the house is said to have withstood all fires because it was protected by the fire blessing of a gypsy woman . But the very idiosyncratic shape may also have contributed to the name. It became known primarily through many postcards that were produced around 1900. A reconstruction of the house was carried out in 1959/60. The house is a listed building .

If you look from the Friedensbrücke into the old town, you can see the Hexenhäusel in the Spreetal below the Mönchsbastei and the Alte Wasserkunst .
