Monk bastion

The monk's Bastion , Sorbian bašta Mniša ? / i , is one of the seven bastion towers of the city fortifications of Bautzen . It was built around 1324 as a rectangular tower. Audio file / audio sample

The bastion should be defended by the monks in the event of war . For this purpose, the building was connected to the Franciscan monastery from 1433 by a corridor . The connecting corridor across Heringstrasse was demolished in 1563. Sewers found during the renovation of the building in the 1990s also testify to the important role played by the monks' bastion in the sewage disposal of the southern part of the medieval old town.

Until 1800 the pastor's apartment was in the bastion; in 1813 during the battle of Bautzen it was used as a hospital. In the years 1868 and 1905 modifications were made. Today the building is used as an apartment.

When looking from the Friedensbrücke you will find the monk's bastion if you orientate yourself on the tower of Petridom . Below the monk's bastion is the legendary witch's house .
