The school , in Sorbian , or the student gate in Bautzen is a gate tower on the northern edge of Bautzen's old town . It is a listed building .
history
The student tower is one of the older of the Bautzen city towers. The intersection of Wendischer Strasse , An den Fleischbänken and Schülerstrasse to the south of the tower can be seen as the center of Bautzen's early town, which received its first town charter as early as 1157 . Even if the tower is located a little off the main roads today, it was one of the most important entrances to the city in the early centuries. The early course of the old Hohen Strasse ( Via Regia ) crossed the Spree at the Hammermühle , ran along Gerberstrasse and reached the protected urban area at the Schülertor, after just a few hundred meters turned off the Schülerstrasse in an easterly direction onto Wendische Strasse and left through the Wendish gate at the Wendish tower the city area. In later times, the school tower was the second interface between the different defense systems of the city, alongside the Lauenturm, in the east (moat in front of the city wall) and west (city wall on rock spur).
At the end of the 15th century the tower was built as a two-gate city entrance and kennel entrance. In 1634 during the Thirty Years War the upper part of the tower burned down and was built in 1673 in the Mannerist style with 4 gables. After a lightning strike in 1833, the roof was changed. The strongly curved gate passage of the roundabout built in front of the gate was demolished in 1840 and the ditch in front of it was leveled. The formerly pointed arch of the school tower was changed to a round arch.
The sandstone relief that is still on the north side (created after 1400) was originally on the Torrondell in front of it. The tower button of the weather vane contains various documents on the building history of the tower, which were last added in 2004 during security work.
