Heydl House in Prachatice

The Heydl House (Czech Heydlův dům ) in Prachatice (German Prachatitz ), a town in the Jihočeský kraj (South Bohemia) region in the Czech Republic , is a basically Gothic building that was rebuilt in the Renaissance style in 1558/59 . The residential building at Kostelní náměstí 29 has been a protected cultural monument since May 3, 1958.

The house is named after the Heydl family, who owned it from 1559 to 1620 at the latest and whose name is written in one of the sgraffitos. The sgraffiti on the second floor of the facade show Heracles fighting the Centaurs and other opponents with his club . A procession of Bacchus can be seen above.

At the neighboring house no. 28 is Samson's shown from the Bible fight with the lion a scene. Next to it is a sgraffito with the inscription

“Thistles and thorns sting a lot, false tongues still (much more. Yes) I would rather bathe in thistles and thorns than be laden with false tongues. 1557 "
