Saphenous hiatus

Saphenous hiatus

The hiatus saphenus (Latin, literally "hidden slit", syn. Fossa ovalis ) is an opening on the medial edge of the fascia lata - at this point also referred to as the fascia cribrosa - below the inguinal ligament . Immediately at the saphenous hiatus is the " venous star " - the union of the great saphenous vein , superficial epigastric vein , superficial circumflex ilium vein , external pudendal vein and anterior femoral vein - which drain into the femoral vein via this opening . The epifascial arteries such as the superficial epigastric artery , the external pudendal artery and the superficial circumflex artery also pass through the saphenous hiatus . Furthermore, the saphenous hiatus represents the outer hernial port of a femoral hernia.
