Great saphenous vein

The great saphenous vein (Vsm, VSM ; "large rose vein"; from Latin vena 'blood vein, vein , and from the Arabic saphenus, -a, -um ' hidden ', and Latin magnus, -a, -um ' large '; called medial saphenous vein in animal anatomy ) is a blood vessel of the lower extremity .

It arises from the confluence of several superficially located foot veins on the lower leg and then extends centrally to the shin and dorsomedially on the inner articular knot of the thigh bone (condylus medialis) on the inside of the thigh. Except in humans, it is accompanied by the saphenous artery . The vein takes in the epifascial veins of the inguinal region on the venous star , runs through the saphenous hiatus and finally opens in the inguinal region into the femoral vein ( vena femoralis ).

The great saphenous vein can be used to draw blood and insert a peripheral venous catheter . In cats in particular, it is the largest of the easily accessible superficial veins.

Varicose veins in the great saphenous vein can be treated with endovenous laser therapy (ELT).
