Hieronymus Lang

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hieronymus Lang (* around 1520 in Hüfingen or Villingen (?); † 1582 in Schaffhausen ) was a glass painter and founder of a traditional family of glass painters in Schaffhausen.

Life

Hieronymus Lang probably came to Schaffhausen in 1540. On January 24, 1541 he married Elsbeth Kloter, after which he became a citizen of the city and was accepted into the male guild as a glazier, glass painter and flat painter . For 40 years he ran a glass painting workshop and was the founder of a family of glass painters that can be traced back over four generations. His sons Daniel , Adrian and Martin also worked as glass painters, as did his grandson Hans Caspar Lang the Elder and the last known family member, his great-grandson Hans Caspar Lang the Younger (1599–1649).

The Langs were in competition with the Lindtmayer and Stimmer families who had also immigrated . Together they established Schaffhausen's reputation as the center of glass painting on the Upper Rhine.

Hieronymus Lang died in Schaffhausen in the spring of 1582.

Hieronymus Lang mainly worked as a glass painter. His clients were citizens and aristocrats who had coats of arms and cabinet disks made for representational purposes. Lang made his panes according to his own cracks (preliminary drawings). His glass paintings have clear contours, simple surface compositions and a high level of luminosity. He used ornamentation, hatching and washings only sparingly. His works are based on the traditions of the Renaissance . The focus was usually on the client with a coat of arms on a pedestal, with the client's name, place of residence and date on a banner or scrollwork cartridge. Lang was the first to sign and date his discs.

Two glass paintings by Lang have been preserved in the collection of the Allerheiligen Museum .

His work as a flat painter, for example painting the clock on the Rheintor (1543) and painting the facade on the Fronwaagturm (1549), have not been preserved.
