Hans Caspar Lang the Elder

Hans Caspar Lang the Elder (born February 18, 1571 in Schaffhausen ; † March 22, 1645 ibid) was a Swiss glass painter , book illustrator, panel and facade painter . From 1642 to 1645 he was mayor of the city of Schaffhausen.

Life

Under the influence of his father Daniel Lang and his grandfather Hieronymus Lang and Tobias Stimmers he learned the painting trade and deepened his knowledge during his wanderings from 1592 to 1595 with stays in Strasbourg and Freiburg. In 1595 he returned to Schaffhausen and married the pastor's daughter Veritas Kolmar the following year. From 1613 he was a member of the Grand Council . In 1624 he became Obervogt zu Neuhausen , 1629 to Herblingen . From 1642 until the year of his death, Lang held the office of mayor of Schaffhausen. He was also the master of the male guild and guild master .

Around 1606 Lang illustrated the chronicle of Johann Jakob Rüeger . He created the template for Caspar Merian's Schaffhausen view (1641) . In the Grand Council Chamber of the town hall in Schaffhausen, Lang painted quotes from the Bible and allegories from the years 1624 to 1625. In 1639 and the following year he painted the wooden ceiling shields in the cross room of the All Saints Monastery with initials and coats of arms.

Drawings from his estate have been preserved and five glass paintings are in the collection of the Allerheiligen Museum . Coat of arms fresco with inscription and signature in the ballroom of Thayngen Castle .
