Hilarius († around 285 in Aquileia ) was an early bishop of Aquileia , martyr and saint .

Live and act

According to legend, Hilary is said to have been second bishop of Aquileia after Hermagoras , who in turn was seen as a direct disciple of the evangelist Mark , so that his term of office would fall into the 1st century. However, Hilarius was martyred under Emperor Numerianus , around 285, so that the connection to Mark appears as a later early dating to give the Patriarchate of Aquileia a more venerable age, and Hermagoras is now also dated to the 3rd century.

Regarding the martyrdom of Hilarius, there is tradition that he was supposed to have been tortured to death with his deacon Tatianus and his companions Felix, Largus and Dionysius. Before the provincial commander Beronius Hilarius admitted to be bishop of the Christians and refused to sacrifice to the Roman gods, whose images he had brought down with his prayer. He was then beheaded together with Tatian on March 16 , his day of remembrance as a saint.
