Hilbert von Löhneysen (born October 25, 1946 in Göttingen ) is a German solid-state physicist.

Hilbert von Löhneysen studied physics at the University of Göttingen from 1970 and received his doctorate in 1976 from the University of Cologne . In 1977/78 he was a post-doctoral student at the Laboratory for Low Temperature Physics of the CNRS in Grenoble . In 1981 he completed his habilitation in Aachen, where he was a private lecturer and in 1984/86 he was a professor. From 1986 he was a professor at the University of Karlsruhe (today KIT). Between 2000 and 2016 he headed the Institute for Solid State Physics at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

He experimentally deals with strongly correlated electron systems, particularly novel magnetic quantum phase transitions and metallic nanostructures (nanocontacts from superconductors to ferromagnets) and layer systems as well as systems of heavy fermions and the metal-insulator transition.

He and his group succeeded in measuring the flow of current through individual molecules.

In 1983 he received the Heinz Maier Leibnitz Prize . In 2012 he received the Hector Science Award and was accepted into the Hector Fellow Academy. He is a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences (2001) and the German Academy of Science and Engineering (2006). He was a member of the Science Council from 2006 to 2012 and Chairman of the Scientific Commission from 2010 to 2012.

From 1994 to 2005 he was co-editor of Solid State Communications and since 1999 of Lecture Notes in Physics (Springer).
