Hilda Elvira Santiago

Hilda Elvira Santiago Novo (born September 16, 1947 in Matanzas ) is a Cuban pianist, composer, choir director and music teacher.

Santiago had his first piano lessons with Graciela Santiago and then studied piano and choral conducting at the Conservatorio Amadeo Roldán . Her other teachers were Margot Rojas Mendoza , Zenaida Manfugás , Cecilio Tieles and Natalia Hornowska in piano, Manuel Ochoa in choral conducting and Edgardo Martín , José Ardévol , Leo Brouwer , Roberto Valera and Federico Smith in music theory.

At the age of fourteen she took over the management of the Coro Provincial de Matanzas . As a piano soloist, she has performed with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Matanzas and the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional under the direction of conductors such as Rafael Somavilla , Reynol Álvarez Otero , Enrique Pérez Mesa , Tomás Fortin , Jorge López Marín , Rafael Ortega , Enrique Castro , Elena Herrera , Zenaida Castro , Hans Dieter Demmiler and Luciano de Elia . She was also a member of various chamber music groups, including Federico Smith's Grupo Siglo XX .

Santiago was the founder of the Festival de Jóvenes Músicos and founding member of the Brigada Hermanos Saíz and taught in several music centers in the Matanzas province. Her compositions include plays for the Teatro Guiñol , a cycle of songs based on texts by José Martí and Nicolás Guillén , choral works based on texts by Gerardo Diego and Federico García Lorca and piano pieces for children.
