Life

Gerardo Diego was born in Santander in 1896 as the son of a businessman. He studied at the Instituto General y Técnico . He started playing the piano at the age of nine. Music always played a special role for Diego and had a great influence on his poems. He studied languages at the Universidad de Deusto and graduated from the University of Salamanca with Miguel de Unamuno . In 1916 he finished his studies at the University of Madrid . His first literary work La caja del abuelo was published in 1918 by El Diario Montañés . In 1920 he moved to Soria to work. From his first salary he financed the publication of El romancero de la novia . He worked with the magazines Grecia , Cervantes and Reflector . In 1921 he met Vicente Huidobro , whom he visited in Paris in 1922 together with Juan Larrea (1895–1980). During this time his books Imagen and Manual de espumas appeared . In 1925 he was awarded the national literature prize for Versos humanos .

Diego was in close contact with other, younger members of the Generación del 27 , such as Jorge Guillén , Dámaso Alonso , Pedro Salinas , Rafael Alberti and Federico García Lorca . In 1927 he founded the magazine Carmen , with the supplement Lola . Like all members of the Generación del 27 , Gerardo Diego was an admirer of Luis de Góngora . On the occasion of the 300th anniversary of Góngora's death , he published a commemorative publication.

Unlike the majority of the Generación del 27 , Gerardo Diego was a supporter of the Franquists during the Spanish Civil War , for whom he wrote hymns of praise.

In 1932 he began to work as a music critic and in 1939 he moved to Madrid, where he worked at the Instituto Beatriz Galindo until his retirement in 1966 . In 1947 Gerardo Diego became a member of the Real Academia Española . In 1956 he was awarded the national literature prize for the second time and in 1980 the Cervantes Prize .

Alongside Dámaso Alonso , Gerardo Diego is one of the most important figures in modern Spanish art. His poems are characterized by impermanence and virtuosity. It also shows an impressive variety of topics, styles, and meters. In his first works, such as El romancero de la novia , one can find both romantic and modern influences (primarily from Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer and Juan Ramón Jiménez). Sometimes he wrote very freely, sometimes very traditionally, but with a modern accent. The form of his poems is consistently perfect. Diego found the perfection of the external form in the sonnet . He was an undisputed master in this field.

Diego's work can hardly be divided into creative periods because it was very diverse at all times. He dealt with difficult subjects such as religiosity in Viacrucis and very light subjects such as the bulls in La suerte o la muerte . He was often inspired by his immediate surroundings. Few of his poems are political. The development from poesía pura to poesía impura , which can be found in many artists of the 27th generation, can also be found in the works of Gerardo Diego. Here it becomes clear that art for art's sake and criticizing art were equally important in his works.
