Reflector is a sludge band that was founded in 1997 in Graz . The duo Andreas Heller (guitar) and David Reumüller (drums) played concerts in Europe and released some releases with the labels "Rock Is Hell Records", "Noise Appeal Records" and "Interstellar Records", to which they have remained loyal to this day.

history

Heller and Reumüller knew each other from the HTL for fine arts . Both played in local bands before, David Reumüller in the grunge band Shüwa and Andreas Heller in the crustpunk band Leben. When both bands broke up almost at the same time, the two decided to do something together. Reflector was founded in June 1997. Reumüller switched from guitar to drums, while Heller kept his guitar. Both were rooted in the hardcore punk scene, so concerts could be given from the start. At that time, the duo model was not so well known in the underground scene . The first concerts took place in Graz and the surrounding area, including at the Culture Festival in Graz and at various art festivals. Shortly afterwards, the first engagements began in Vienna.

In 1998 the first demo Short Grief and a split 7 '' with steel helmet Surfers appeared. After the self-titled debut album in 2000 (on Dusk Records ) the band switched to the Graz avant-garde label Tonto, where the EP Flugangst was released. At the same time, the band played together with Garfield von Schlauch and the painter Delaine Gilma in a project called Noggen , which combined music and painting. A canvas with the silhouettes of the band members was painted over to the music.

After a development phase, the album Phantoms followed in 2005 , the first collaboration with Bernd Heinrauch ( Bunny Lake ), who has accompanied the band to this day as a guest musician and producer. The album became a huge success. At the same time, the EP Flugangst was re-released on the Rock Is Hell label .

In 2009 the album Pass was released on Noise Appeal Records . Robert Lepenik (ex- Fetish 69 , The Striggles ) can be heard on the album , who occasionally supports the band with live performances. In 2012 the last album to date, The Heritage, was released . In addition, several EPs and split releases were made. For the 15th anniversary, the box set 15 with four 7 '' was released in November 2012 .

The two members are also very active in the Austrian art scene. Reumüller is involved in the Styrian Rock Archive and makes documentaries . He also writes books about the Austrian music scene. Heller organizes exhibitions in the Forum Stadtpark and is a lecturer in plastic design .

style

Reflector move stylistically between Sludge, Alternative Rock , Noise and Doom Metal , without giving preference to any particular direction. Many songs are instrumental, but both musicians also appear as singers. The music is, according to the style, monotonous and underlaid with hard, slow riffs, whereby the band breaks through this barreness again and again with "normal" metal and rock riffs.
