Hilda Tloubatla

Hilda Semola Tloubatla (* 1942 in Payneville ( Springs )) is a South African world music and jazz singer .

Tlubatla spent her childhood in Payneville before she and her family were forced to move to Kwa-Thema Township in 1951. She initially sang in the church choir, but also at dance events and jam sessions . The first recordings for radio were made as early as 1960. In 1964 she became a founding member of the Mahotella Queens , as their lead singer she is featured on numerous recordings and made the Mbaqanga known. In 1968 she interrupted her career to get married and raise three daughters. In 1984, when the group was revived, they got back on track, soon to tour around the world. She can also be heard as a soloist on albums by Ray Lema , Joy Denalane and Art of Noise .

In 2005 she was awarded the Ikhamanga bronze medal for her services to music.
