The Hill 62 is a small hill on the southeastern edge of Ypres , which in World War I played a strategic role. Today Hill 62 is a Canadian memorial .

history

Hill 62 lay within the Ypres arch , the front line that shifted only slightly over four years. Hill 62 is located in Sanctuary Wood on the top of Mount Sorrel. Hill 62 was mainly held by the Canadian Expeditionary Force and wrested from the German army in an offensive operation in early June 1916 after the Second Battle of Flanders in the battle of Mont Sorrel . The hill also played an important role in the Third and Fourth Battles of Flanders .

The Canadian Hill 62 Memorial Grounds are located at the southwest end of the wooded area known by the British as Sanctuary Wood in the Zillebeke district of Ypres, at the end of the Canadalaan . A few hundred meters north is the Sanctuary Wood CWGC Cemetery and halfway between the two is the Hill 62 Sanctuary Wood Museum , which is open all year round.
