Sanctuary Wood Cemetery is a small British military cemetery of the First World War with a triangular base, about five kilometers southeast of Ypres and about 200 meters from Hill 62 removed.

history

Sanctuary Wood (" Refugium -Wald") was called the forest by British troops in November 1914 because it offered protection to the troops in the fighting over Ypres. In September 1915, three smaller cemeteries, which were laid out between May and August 1915, were largely destroyed in the battle of Mount Sorrel . The rest of 137 graves could only be found at the end of the war. Between 1927 and 1932, individual graves from the surrounding area were reburied here. Most of the dead come from the Second , Third and Fourth Battles of Flanders , a total of 637 graves. The counterpart on the other side of the front was the Koelberg military cemetery .
