The Hilma Hooker is a wreck off Bonaire . It was built in 1951 and sank in 1984.

history

The Hilma Hooker was a cargo ship 71.8 m long and 11 m wide. It was built in the Netherlands in 1951 . It was sunk on September 12, 1984 at 9:08 a.m. and is now used as a diving destination off the island of Bonaire in the Lesser Antilles . The Hilma Hooker rests at a depth of 31 m on the sea floor.

Hilma Hooker's previous names were Midsland , Mistral , William Express , Anna and Doric Express .

Reason of sinking

When the Hilma Hooker had engine problems on a crossing from Panama to Venezuela, but rejected all offers of help from Bonaire, the customs authorities were puzzled and towed the ship into the port of the capital Kralendijk . There it was examined more closely. After a detailed inspection of the cargo holds, investigators found around eleven tons of marijuana . Thereupon the captain and the crew were arrested, the ship was first confiscated and the drugs secured as evidence. Since the hull began to leak over time and the ship was in a very poor condition anyway and repairs would have been too expensive, the owner decided against repairing it, had it cannibalized and ultimately sunk.
