Hilsa is a city in the Indian state of Bihar .
The city is part of the Nalanda District . Hilsa has the status of a Nagar Parishad . The city is divided into 26 wards . It had a total of 51,052 inhabitants on the cut-off date of the 2011 census, of which 27,055 were men and 23,997 women. Hindus form the largest group of the city's population with a share of over 89%, followed by Muslims with over 8%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 76.49% and thus slightly above the national average.
The city is served by State Highway 4 and is directly connected to major cities in Bihar. It has been connected to the national rail network since 1922.
