Heaven and Earth
Himmel und Erde ( Rhenish : Himmel un Ääd , Dutch: hete bliksem ) is a traditional Rhenish , Westphalian , Lower Saxony , Dutch and Silesian dish made from mashed potatoes and applesauce or apple pieces.
The dish has been known since the 18th century . It got its name from the name Erdapfel for potatoes , which was common in the past and is still used in various regions today , so that “heaven” stands for the apples on the trees and “earth” for the potatoes in the earth as the main components of the dish.
Heaven and earth are often served together with (smoked) fried black pudding , roasted onions and also bacon or fried liver sausage . In the region around Hamburg, grützwurst is one of them.
