The Church of the Assumption of Mary (French: Église de l'Assomption ) is a Roman Catholic church in Castelreng in the Aude department in France . The medieval parts of the church including the tower, the fortified gate within the former north-west wall and the wrought-iron cross next to the gate were classified as a monument historique in 1948 as an ensemble .

history

According to the dating of the French monuments administration, the Assumption Church is essentially a building in the Romanesque style from the 12th century. However, a first church consecration in Castelreng is documented as early as 1088 by Dalmace, Archbishop of Narbonne . The Romanesque church was probably replaced in the 18th century by a larger new building using medieval masonry. The Romanesque masonry supports the bell tower and limited u. a. the vestibule. The mighty, undivided tower is oriented to the north, to the south a semicircular apse has been preserved. Due to subsidence, the old masonry had to be renewed except for the tower walls in 1833. The nave is now oriented as a rectangular hall between the tower and apse in a west-east direction.
