Himmelpforten was a municipality in the Soest district in the Prussian province of Westphalia . Their area has fallen desolate today and belongs to the municipality of Ense in the Soest district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

geography

The municipality of Himmelpforten was located in the Möhnebogen opposite Niederense and comprised the Himmelpforten estate and the surrounding agricultural areas. In 1885 it had an area of 4.49 km².

history

The Himmelpforten monastery , historically part of the Werl office of the Duchy of Westphalia , became the Himmelpforten estate through secularization in 1802. The monastery church remained the parish church of the nearby village of Niederense . Since the middle of the 19th century, the estate and church have formed their own rural community in the Soest district, which initially belonged to the Körbecke office and from 1890 to the Bremen office. On April 1, 1901, the municipality of Himmelpforten was incorporated into the municipality of Niederense. Niederense became part of the municipality of Ense in 1969.

The flood wave of the Möhne disaster in May 1943 destroyed all of the buildings in Himmelpforten. They weren't rebuilt. At the site of the former estate, a memorial today commemorates the victims of the Möhne disaster.
