Hinrich Wittekop

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hinrich Wittekop († probably 1627 in Lübeck ) was a German cabinet maker and picture carver.

Life

Wittekop was approved as a master by the senior master of the carpenter's office in 1613 and received citizenship of the Hanseatic city in the following year . In 1614 he married Elsabe, the widow of the respected carver Tönnies Evers the Elder. J. , and continued his famous workshop; but soon ruined it. The widow and her children had inherited the house at Hundestrasse 17 in Lübeck, which he owned in 1616.

The St. Jürgen group from the old chapel, today in the St. Annen Museum, with the “replacement kite” from Wittekop

In 1614 he took over the completion of the large commission room in the chancellery building . In 1619 he created the (replacement) dragon for the statue of St. Jürgen , which Henning von der Heyde had created in 1505. The group was originally located in the old St. Jürgen Chapel and the original dragon was destroyed in the turmoil of the Reformation. The replacement kite Wittekops is considered to be clearly out of proportion for the entire group. The statue of St. Jürgen was later transferred to the new St. Jürgen chapel, but there it was felt to be too ancient and unsuitable for the new structure. It was stored in the attic , where it was found again in 1861. The work of art was brought to the Katharinenkirche and Carl Julius Milde carried out the restoration. It has been in the St. Annen Museum since 1915 .
