Hipódromo de Agua Caliente is a horse racing track in the Mexican border town of Tijuana , Baja California . The operator of the system is Hipódromo de Agua Caliente SA de CV.

history

The Hipódromo with 11,000 grandstand seats was built in 1915 and has been the venue for the “Agua Caliente Handicap” since 1917. This international horse race also attracted wealthy Southern Californians and was one of the most highly endowed horse races in North America until 1958 . Well-known jockeys who won the Agua Caliente Handicap in Tijuana included George Woolf , Eddie Arcaro and Bill Zapatero .

In 1938, when the then Mexican President Lázaro Cárdenas banned gambling and horse racing, the facility was closed. After the ban on gambling was lifted, another Agua Caliente Handicap race took place in 1958. In August 1971 the original grandstand structure of the racetrack was destroyed by fire. It was then restored and reopened in 1974.

Today the Hipódromo de Agua Caliente is a racetrack where greyhound races are held. The Estadio Caliente football stadium , which opened in 2007, is also located on the site of the Hipódromos .
